How to Nail Job Interviews

An interview can be an exciting opportunity to showcase your skills and personality to a potential employer. It’s a chance to highlight your experience and show why you’re the perfect fit for the job. With preparation and a positive attitude, an interview can be a rewarding experience that leads to a fulfilling career.

Whether you are a fresh graduate or already an expert, you will sometimes be anxious about how to pass an interview when looking for a new job opportunity.

How should you prepare and overcome that anxiousness to nail every interview?

Worry not!

This article contains everything about the interview and tips for getting the job you aim for!

Tip#1 Read the full job description and its prerequisites.

This is a primary step when you are finding a job. When browsing the job list, reading the job description is essential because it provides a detailed overview of the position, including its responsibilities, qualifications, and requirements. After reading the job description and its prerequisites, answering these questions can help you decide if that job matches your expectations.

  1. Are you able to deliver the required skills and experience?
  2. Are you happy to work the available working hours?
  3. Is the compensation within your desired range?

Tip#2 Research the company.

Researching the company before an interview is important because it shows the interviewer that you are interested in the position and have taken the time to learn about the company’s culture, values, and mission. It also helps you to prepare for the interview by understanding what the company is looking for in a candidate and anticipating the types of questions you may be asked.

Remember: Don’t just apply for the sake of applying, and you are coming wanting to be a part of that company.

Tip#3 Practice your speaking skills by talking to yourself.

Yes, practising speaking by talking to yourself can be an effective way to improve your communication skills. It can help you build confidence, improve pronunciation and fluency, and organise your thoughts.

To do this, practice answering common questions asked during an interview or try to organise your thoughts and say all the things about your skills and attitude towards the workplace which are relevant to the position you are applying for.

Doing so can build your confidence and become a more effective communicator.

Tip#4 Be confident during your interview.

After you’ve done the first four tips, you are now invited to an interview. Make sure you are fully prepared and do not be shy, and express yourself in a way that can lift you and highlight the good things about you to get the job.

Here’s a checklist for you to help you boost your confidence.

  • Make sure you are fully prepared and know all the details about the company.
  • Make a list containing your skills, accomplishments, and experiences. (Remember to refrain from reading them as interviewers know when you read notes and may think you are unprepared).
  • Dress well: Choose clothing that makes you feel confident and professional.
  • Make sure your body language conveys confidence and professionalism.

In Filta’s Facebook live broadcast last Apr 27, 2023, Experience Manager Josh Edelman and Global Recruitment Team Leader Ires Salandanan gave us chunky tips to help everyone facing fears during an interview.

“A huge thing that I have noticed and that I have seen is, you know, a lot of people are really going for a role, and then they’re trying to barter at the end to change the compensation for what they need.”

This is one of the things that Josh said that is worth noting, and let’s be honest. Though it’s funny, it’s true. Sometimes, we do things to fit everything for our own convenience even at work.

When you barter during an interview, It could mean to the interviewer that you are not able to read the full job description and requirements, which might not be a good sign for you.

Josh’s tip is a great reminder of how reading the job description and understanding it well can help our lives easier, and won’t waste your time and the interviewer in case, in the end, you both don’t meet halfway.

Also, Ires shared her tips on how you can ace your interview.

“Use “I” when speaking instead of “us” or “we.”

“Tell me about an experience that happened before.”

When telling you all the things about yourself, Ires recommended that it is better to tell the experience, like what problems you have faced and how you were able to solve them. It is recommended to speak the pronoun “I” as this will imply that you are the one who solved the problem rather than “we”. With that, the interviewer will be able to gauge your capabilities and problem-solving skills in the workplace and see if you are fit for the job.

At the end of the interview, both said the key is just to be yourself and keep your answers precise, and short but informative, do not be nervous, as an interview is just a conversation.

In conclusion

To nail an interview, being prepared can help you make a positive impression, answer questions effectively, and reduce stress and anxiety which can help you demonstrate professionalism. It will also show that you are serious about the job and increase your chance of being hired.

And to finally do your interview like a star, make sure you have gathered all the details about the company you are aiming for and practised everything until you speak to them with confidence and with a positive attitude that you will land a job.

Maybe finding a job has never been easy for some, but it’s alright, as difficulties make you stronger!
