This blog gives you 7 questions to take into any provider conversation.

Before you hand over a piece of your business to an offshore staffing provider, look past the pitch deck.
Every provider will tell you they’re different. They’ll talk about culture fit, seamless onboarding, and their deep talent network. What they rarely lead with is their retention data, because for most of them, those numbers don’t hold up under scrutiny.
If a provider can’t retain their own people, they will quietly cost you a fortune in turnover, retraining, and lost institutional knowledge. The good news is that there are seven questions that cut through the noise fast. Ask them directly, and the answers will tell you everything you need to know.
1. What is your average team member tenure across your client base?
This is the single most important number in offshore staffing: not how quickly they can onboard someone, but how long people actually stay. A provider that’s genuinely built for retention will know this number and share it without hesitation. Vague answers like “it varies by client” or “we’d have to check on that” mean they don’t track it, which tells you everything.
2. What is your annual attrition rate?
Industry average sits between 30–45%. If a provider’s rate is meaningfully lower, ask them to explain exactly why and how they’ve achieved that. If they don’t know their own number, you have your answer right there.
3. Are team members employed directly, or engaged as contractors?
This one matters more than most people realize. Contractors have no statutory benefits and no real job security. They’ll leave the moment a better offer lands, particularly one that comes with a proper direct employment contract. The employment structure is the single biggest driver of retention, and it’s worth understanding clearly before anything is signed.
4. Do you have in-country HR staff, or just account managers?
Account managers pass information along. They cannot sit down with a team member who’s feeling disconnected, or catch a morale issue before it turns into a resignation. In-country HR presence is what separates providers who genuinely manage people from those who manage placements.
5. What statutory benefits do team members receive, and who handles them?
In the Philippines, that means 13th month pay, PhilHealth, SSS, and Pag-IBIG. In Colombia, it’s cesantías and prima. These are not optional, and a provider who can’t clearly explain who’s responsible for processing them, and how, is either missing them or mishandling them.
6. When someone leaves, who covers the cost of replacement?
Some contracts quietly push that cost back onto the client. It’s worth knowing upfront. A provider that’s genuinely confident in their retention model shouldn’t need to hedge on this.
7. What do you do proactively to retain team members before they hand in their notice?
Not what they do after someone resigns. What structures, check-ins, and early-warning systems exist to catch problems before they become departures? If the answer is vague or generic, retention is an afterthought in their model, not a priority.
If a provider gives you vague, defensive, or data-free answers to these seven questions, you have all the information you need. Their model is built on volume and replacement, not on protecting your team.
Filta answers all seven.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- What is a normal attrition rate for offshore staffing?
The industry average is 30-45% annually, meaning nearly half a typical provider’s team turns over every year. Providers with a genuine retention model, built on direct employment, dedicated placement, and in-country HR, can bring that number down significantly. - Why does it matter whether offshore staff are contractors or direct employees?
It matters enormously. Contractors have no statutory benefits, no formal job security, and no structural reason to prioritize your business over the next offer that comes along. Direct employees under a compliant employment contract have legal protections, mandatory benefits, and a real employment relationship, all of which create genuine retention incentives. - What should a good offshore provider’s average tenure be?
Anything under 18 months is a red flag. A provider with a real retention model in place should be seeing average tenure of 3 years or more across their client base. - What happens if these questions aren’t asked before signing?
You risk entering an arrangement built on volume rather than longevity, which means recurring turnover, repeated onboarding costs, and ongoing productivity gaps. One poorly structured offshore contract can easily cost tens of thousands of dollars per role per year once the real numbers are added up.
